The Art of Hygge

The Art of Hygge

There’s a Danish concept called hygge (pronounced "hoo-gah"), which embodies a quality of coziness and comfort that brings about a feeling of contentment and well-being.

Hygge is about finding moments of comfort and tranquility in life. It’s the opposite of grind culture and the relentless pursuit of success. Hygge is about doing those things that allow you to pause, reflect, and take refuge from the grind of everyday life. Hygge urges you to be mindful of your happiness and physical and mental wellbeing.

Hygge is a mindset. Think of cuddling in a warm blanket while watching your favorite movie, sharing a meal with loved ones, or taking a leisurely walk. It’s the joy of wearing soft, comfortable clothes, sitting by a fireplace, lighting candles, brewing a cup of tea, or curling up in bed with a good book. Hygge doesn’t require a lot of money or a lavish vacation in the Bahamas. Although I'm not knocking a vacation in the Bahamas. It’s about making small, deliberate choices each day to improve your contentment and well-being. It's about making choices that allow you to pause, take a break, and recharge—choices that make you feel good.

But hygge is more than a collection of activities; it’s about focusing on what makes you happy and creating an environment that fosters it. Whether it’s hanging out with friends, enjoying a quiet moment alone, or indulging in a favorite treat, Hygge encourages you to find joy in the present moment.

There are so many expectations placed on women by society; think of all the “shoulds” you have to deal with on a daily basis that can cause stress:

Appearance: Women "should" maintain a certain body type, dress fashionably, and always look young, because being attractive is the key to success. Career: women "should" have successful careers while also balancing family responsibilities, but not make more money than their partners.  Motherhood: Women "should" be perfect mothers, always putting their children’s needs first. Relationships: Women "should" be nurturing partners and manage social connections effortlessly. Emotional: Women "should" be emotionally supportive and nurturing and never show extreme emotions like anger. Social Media: Women "should" have perfect lives like those presented on social media. Disney Princess syndrome: Women "should" wait because one day their prince will come to rescue them.

This list is not a complete list, but you get the idea.

Trying to keep these personas up is exhausting and can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. These "shoulds" cause unrealistic expectations. You can't be your authentic self if you have to be something else.

The mindset of Hygge is the opposite of a "should" mindset.

Incorporating a healthy mindset can have a profound effect on your mental and physical well-being. It reminds you to slow down, to appreciate the little things, and to take care of yourself. It reminds you that the purpose of life isn't how much you make or the things you own, but the joy you find in it.

By embracing the Hygge mindset, you create a sanctuary of calm and a refuge from the craziness.  Hygge is about creating sanctuary by embracing a lifestyle that brings you joy and contentment.
